LESSON 4

Pronouns & to be

A pronoun is an incredibly important facet of language. It lets you easily talk about yourself, the person you're speaking to, and your immediately surroundings. As does being able to compare things to each other, like with a verb for to be! So let's hop to it already! You'll love having learnt this by the time we're done.

PRONOUNS

Selsimicu has three types of basic pronouns, these being the speaker (1st person, "me"), the listener (2nd person, "you") and anyone / anything else (3rd person, "she", "he", "they" or "it"). However, most Selsimicu pronouns are distinguished by the noun class of what's being talked about, and thus each of these pronouns has three forms (except the 1st person, because if you're talking about yourself, you're probably Animate.)

Here's a simple chart showing all 7 of Selsimicu's personal pronouns:

[A] [I] [O]
1st P. asa
2nd P. oto oteli otsin
3rd P. nata neko no'o

USE CASES

Luckily, pronouns aren't as complicated once you know these. These pronouns are pluralized normally (asasa, ototo, neneko, nanata, etc.), and you can adjectivize them to use them as possesives! (asan, oton, nekon, natan). Here's a few sentences using pronouns, to get you warmed up:

Hmm, hold that thought. What's cu?

TO BE, OR TO BE, OR TO BE

What if you wanna say that one thing is another thing in Selsimicu? We've already covered noun-adjective sentences, but what about noun-noun? (i'm a teacher, selsians aren't human, water is a liquid, etc.)

Well, this is when Selsimicu's "to be" verb comes into play! It's also conjugated by the noun class of the subject, but the many mergers that it's gone through have left just 4 versions of this verb, rather than 7 or even 9! It's still more than any other verb, though. Here's another chart!

[A] [I] [O]
1st P. kres
2nd P. ñaf fi
3rd P. cu

So now, we know that "no'o eifa cu" is using cu, the 3rd Person non-Animate (Inanimate or Otherworldly) To Be verb! Since no'o is itself 3rd Person Otherworldly, this checks out. How about those other sentences?

END!!!

Congratulations! You are now one step closer to learning Selsimicu for realsies! This lesson is probably the one that'll give you the most conversational freedom for now, but I assure you this is only the beginning! On we go!
