LESSON 9

ta & um

Our last recent lessons were pretty topic-heavy, so let's keep it simple now! This lesson will introduce the genitive particles "ta" & "um", used for showing possession and composition!

FUNCTION

These two words have the same function, so we'll dive into that first before describing each word's nuances.

They take the form of [noun phrase 1] [ta/um] [noun phrase 2], connecting two nouns directly, where noun phrase 2 is some sort of "characteristic" of noun phrase 1. Get a feel for how these few sentences look. We'll break them down later.

TA

"ta" forms a possessive relationship, where noun phrase 2 is the possessor, and noun phrase 1 is the thing they possess. This can be literal (they have or own said thing), or more metaphorical (they "have" a powerful imagination, a strong soul, or they live in a certain village, and so you can say the village is "of them" despite not owning it.)

Let's get you some more examples, and then explain the two "ta" examples up top!

UM

"um" forms a compositional relationship, where noun phrase 2 is the material, and noun phrase 1 is the thing that's made of noun phrase 2. This is usually literal (it's quite literally made of said thing), but less literal applications exist.

Let's get you some more examples, and then explain the two "um" examples up top!

That's pretty much it! I'll leave you with some sentences to work out. We've not had very many of those in a while!

END!!!

Congratulations! You're now one step closer to learning Selsimicu! More advanced sentences are on the way, so let's keep rolling!
